Let’s talk about Sex
By Emily Thompson

Tuesday marked the start of Sexual Responsibility Week, a growing trend among college campuses nation-wide.

The week long campaign, which runs until February 19, is in its third year and always coordinates with Valentines day.

To honor Sexual Responsibility Week, Albion College Safer Sex Peer Educators coordinated a number of events throughout the week.

Early in the week, the group handed out free condom-grams in the Kellogg Center. Condoms were available for students to mail to their friends.

“I sent [condom grams] because it was an easy way to make people laugh and give them advice at the same time,” said Maggie Menoch, West Bloomfield junior.

“I sent condom grams becuase I don’t think people are comfortable even saying the word condom,” said JoAnn Debo, Willow Brook, Ill. senior. “It’s just to make sure that people are more comfortable with condoms.”

Tuesday, the group sponsored the Safer Sex fair in the Kellogg center Stack. The Safer Sex Peer Educaters, along with campus groups such as Aids Awarness Alliance, and Sexual Agression Peer Educator, were available to answer questions. Free condoms and informational handouts were also available.

Wednesday, the group sponsored a safer sex panel in the Stack. Representatives from the Health Center, along with the campus groups which were available at the fair, were there to answer student questions.

“[Safer sex education] is important for college students in general because so many are involved in sexual relations. But not many now how to go about it safely; not necessarily to abstain which is an option, but not the only one. We’re here to answer questions and address concerns,” said Julie Henning, Dewitt senior and safer sex peer educator.
