Imani to rock the house Tonight
By Megan Frounfelter
Staff Writer

Looking for some sassy sounds to spice up your Friday evening? Then Union Board has just the solution for you.

The Friday Night Live series will feature Imani this week, an all-female musical group from Philadelphia. In Swahili the group name means faith. The musical sensations were seven-time winners on the program Star Search, and were the opening act for several well-known musical artists including Boyz II Men, TLC, and Bill Cosby.

UB hopes that students will attend this event because it is different than the performances of the past. “It won’t be the typical Friday Night Live series,” said Rebecca Bortz, Garden City freshman and UB vice president of music performances. “Often UB features male bands that are rock-oriented. This week we are offering the opposite side of the spectrum in terms of musical style.”

Imani offers a wide range of musical sounds. They are known for their traditional sounds of rhythm and blues, but the crowd can also expect to hear various gospel numbers. James Gignac, Washington senior and UB president said, “They combine R&B and hip hop to create an entertaining show.”

UB first heard this group perform at the National Association for Campus Activities conference held in Kentucky last spring. “We were impressed by their energy, enthusiasm, and singing abilities,” Gignac said.

UB also chose this group to perform at Albion because February is Black History month. “UB strives to incorporate diversity into our programming and African American female performers seemed like a good way to reach out to different audiences and tastes in music,” Gignac said.

UB feels that all students should take advantage of the Friday Night Live series. “Everyone should come to UB functions,” Bortz said. “Everyone complains about nothing to do, and UB always offers something to do. The more interest the campus puts in the better because that means that future entertainment will be better.”

Gignac said, “UB’s Friday night live series is designed to provide students with live entertainment almost every weekend.”

The UB members hope for a large audience tonight. Bortz said, “Coming to the show will be an easy way to kick back and relax before going out on Friday night.”
