Charlie's Angels: The chive fries are heaven sent
By Emily Thompson
Editor-in-Chief
Tuesday morning, after a riveting discussion about JFK in our 1960s class, my co-editorJamelah and I were hungry. We decided to head over to Charlie's Tavern, located right downtown, for an early lunch.
When we arrived shortly after 11 a.m., Charlie's was pretty much empty. We chose a booth near the back of the restaurant, and our waitress promptly came over to give us menus and take our drink orders. We had both slept for about 10 minutes the night before and were in desperate need of caffeine, so I ordered a coffee and Jamelah got a Diet Coke. I was happy to find the coffee very strong. After enduring Baldwin's weak coffee for so long, it was nice to taste a change. And Jamelah's pop came in a can, which was a big plus because Jamelah hates fountain pop.
We thought about ordering some beers-Charlie's has a pretty nice variety, including anything from Battle Creek Arcadia to Bud Ice-but since it was only a little after 11 in the morning, we decided that we didn't want to take our upcoming Shakespeare quiz while under the influence.
After a few moments, we had to face the inevitable. It was time to order. I was having a really hard time deciding between the grilled cheese on texas toast and the crazy crusts. Crazy crust is basically a pizza without the sauce that comes with sauce for dipping. They're usually pretty awesome. But at the last minute, I decided I was definitely in the mood for grilled cheese. I ordered a small chef's salad, too.
I was suprised to find that the chef's salad comes with a choice of meat, even though it only costs around two dollars. I decided that the salad was a deal in itself, and I opted for at meatless version.
Jamelah also ordered the grilled cheese, but got some sour cream and chive fries, too. She had been talking about these fries since we decided to go to Charlie's.
Our food came about three minutes after we ordered, and we dug in. My grilled cheese was really good because the bread was extra thick and not at all greasy. The salad was fabulous, too, especially since I'm a huge fan of olives. It contained tons of both black and green olives.
Jamelah ate her food so quickly, I blinked and it was gone! She's been a fan of Charlie's sour cream and chive fries since the first time she tried them years ago. I managed to grab one from her plate-even though she almost bit my fingers off-and I agree with Jamelah. They were fantastic!
After we ate, we were pretty full because the portions were quite large. I couldn't finish my whole salad, and Jamelah actually left a scrap of grilled cheese on the plate. But even though neither of us joined the clean plate club, we really enjoyed the food.
Two grilled cheeses with thick toast, two side orders, and two drinks only cost us $10.50, so we didn't even break the bank. And by the time we left, Charlie's had filled up.
As we hopped back into Jamelah's Taurus, we decided that we might even make Tuesday a Charlie's day. Maybe we'll get some beers next time, provided we don't have a Shakespeare quiz.
