Big fish in a small pond: Albion aquatics
By Staff Writer

With senior leadership returning and high expectations for the freshmen, Albion swimming and diving continues to plunge ahead.

1994-95 standings placed Albion men third, behind Hope and Kalamazoo. Albion women tied for second with Kalamazoo, behind Hope. Hope and Kalamazoo have controlled the MIAA Championship title since 1972. But times change - as Albion fully realizes.

Numbers change. The men's and women's teams are not as even as they usually are, with 27 women and only a dozen men.

The women's team is largely freshmen. In fact, the senior co-captains Amy Schmidt, Albion, and Andrea Stubbs, Battle Creek, are both out of the country this semester. Heather White, Livonia senior, is also not swimming this semester while she student teaches.

All three plan to return next semester joining the freshman swimmers and divers who Keith Havens, director of Dean Aquatics Center and team coach, described as "looking good."

"The men's team this year is low in numbers but we have very strong swimmers," said William McAdams, Hamilton, Ohio, senior.

"We've got a core of strong men's swimmers. We just need more bodies. We'll win lots of individual events, but it's hard to win meets with [these numbers]," Havens said. Albion aquatics head to the Poe Invitational at Wheaton this weekend.
