Short players, scrappy play
By Staff Writer

As a team goal, the 1995 women's volleyball players might have suggested "Stand Tall" before the season started.

With only one player above 5'8", their defensive philosophy makes sense. And it explains why each player has played "taller" than they actually are.

To make up for the lack of blocking at the net, the squad relied on defensive shifts and adjustments to free up players in the back.

Donna Stone, assistant professor of physical education and volleyball coach, said "scrappiness" was a defensive theme this year.

Holly Hay, Brighton senior and co-captain, agreed. In order to stay in games this year, she said they had to "try to be scrappy defensively."

The lack of height wasn't the only concern for the team. Two of the outstanding players are on internships in Philadelphia and in Europe.

"We've got the skills and the talent," Hay said, but the time hasn't come when the team has been able to put it all together. Plus, the MIAA has always been a particularly strong league for women's volleyball, Stone said. There have usually been one or two nationally ranked teams in the conference every year.

"We've surprised some people," Stone said. She added that they hope to continue surprising teams in the future.

Along with the coaches, co-captains Hay and Jennifer Wolf, Royal Oak senior, helped keep attitudes high.

"This year, I'm not afraid to speak up," Hay said. This involves taking charge in practice by pointing out errors and improving morale. Hay believes the team's success depends on whether the players pull together and fire on all cylinders. "They [haven't gone] into any game expecting to lose," Stone said.

With a stronger emphasis on defense and positive player attitudes, the volleyball squad came close to reaching only its third .500 season in 20 years, winning nine of their 20 games this season.
