Project First Step

"Psychologists have been saying since 1700 that all we know comes through the senses. Neurologists have been saying for 50 years that human beings learn through movement. Yet at age six, the child is placed in a three foot cubicle and expected to learn." (Steele, 1976, p.1)

Project  First  Step®

Project First Step (PFS) is an experience-based program which concentrates on enhancing the fundamental physical movement skills which are necessary in order for optimum academic learning to take place.

Project First Step

Need For the Program

Social and cultural changes in society indicate that many children today are not exhibiting the physical, emotional, and social readiness skills which are needed to be successful in academic learning. Both parents working or single parent homes have an impact on how children spend their free time. Many children spend more time in front of a television or video game than they do playing.

What has Project First Step Done?

Through the Taught With Internationalized Skills Technique (TWIST), Project First Step has been incorporated into a summer program run here at Albion. The program is one of two main components in the TWIST. Through this project we have been able to reach over over 400 children in just one summer session. We have also taken Project First Step and put it into action at several area school districts and their physical education programs. Project First Step has laid a foundation of success in implementation to build upon for the future.

What is Project First Step Planning

In conjunction with the TWIST, Jump into Kindergarten and Project First Step is involved in a national scale movement. Dr. Thomas Johnson has given presentations in Washington D.C., at the Regional and State levels. Project First Step is expanding and growing to help more children become successful in life. In the future, we hope to continue the TWIST and Jump into Kindergarten program at both the Albion College camp, and other national sites as well.
