Helpful Software
Free Music Notation Software
- Lilypond
- Open source software released under the GNU General Public License. This software is very stable and has a lot of great features. However, this software takes some time to learn as it runs entirely off of text commands. Learning to use this software is similar to learning a computer programming language
- Denemo
- Denemo is a front-end for Lilypond that gives Lilypond a nice user-friendly graphical user interface allowing it to function more like Finale® Notepad.
- LaTeX with MusicTeX Package
- LaTeX is a collection of very powerful typesetting software for typesetting professional documents. Like Lilypond it is completely based on text commands similar to computer programming. The learning curve on this software is even greater than that of Lilypond due to the wide range of features.
- Finale® Notepad
- This is the easiest software to download and use for creating music notation. It has a simple point and click interface. It also has the ability to play back the music using MIDI technology. However, Notepad has some limitations to the kind of music that it can represent.
