Activities
In addition to electing new members twice a year, the chapter has other activities:
The
chapter hosts an initiation ceremony and banquet every year the
evening before Honors Convocation.
Each
year the chapter selects the Phi Beta Kappa Faculty Scholar of the Year.
This year's recipients are
Frank Machek, Professor of Art Emeritus, and Selva Raj, Associate Professor
of Religious Studies. The recipient is
recognized at the college Honors Convocation, receives a cash award and is
the speaker at the annual initiation banquet.
The chapter recognizes
the outstanding sophomore(s) and junior(s) at Albion College through scholarship
recognition awards. We
invite them to be our guests at our annual initiation banquet and presented
them with a book, chosen from a list.
The chapter honors the top
students at the local high school by presenting book awards and certificates
to the top seniors, and certificates and college library privileges to the
underclassmen. The top
sophomore and juniors at the high school will also receive tickets to the
college's lecture-concert series as a result of a gift from an emeritus
member of the chapter.
Approximately every other year the chapter brings a Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar to campus. The Scholar gives a public address, a technical seminar and does several class presentations. During the 2002-03 school year the speaker was Dr. Michael S. Turner, Rauner Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Chicago. In addition to appearances in several classes he gave a public address, "....In the Beginning". In November of 2005, the speaker was Dr. Deborah Stone, the Research Professor of Government and Public Policy at Dartmouth College, who spoke on the topic "The Paradox of Altruism."
