Best-Kept SecretsSome great things about Albion don't jump out at you. You may not even find out about them until you have been on campus for a year or two. Here are a few to give you a head start... Dining SecretsEvery semester students on board get an Eat Shop card worth $25, to spend throughout that semester.
You can pick up Baldwin menus at the beginning of each week, so you know what will be served for every meal all week long. Menus are also available through the Dining Services Web site. A registered dietician in Student Health Services can help you select healthy foods from the Baldwin menus. Contact Student Health Services for more information. Entertainment SecretsThe Albion College coffeehouse is a unique addition to such a small school. It provides students with an alternative to the Kellogg Center, more personalized space, and a range of entertainment, including performers, bands, and open mic nights.
Located in front of Mitchell Towers, it is open Monday through Friday mornings - for those people who must have a caffeine boost - and Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evenings for hanging out with friends. Group meetings and classes are welcome, and prior notification is appreciated. Don’t miss out on the fun and excitement at the coffeehouse through out the year. Contact 629-1806 for more information. Health and Fitness SecretsYou can check out basketballs and other sporting equipment with your ID card at the Dow Center.
Intramural sports teams compete throughout the year in flag football, floor hockey, racquetball, and other sports. You can register your team online through the IM Sports Web site. Behind the Dow, near the softball field, is a canoe livery where you can launch canoes off into the Kalamazoo River and go canoeing. Dow Center staff can tell you more about proper procedures for using the canoes. Down the road from the Dow Center, the Whitehouse Nature Center has miles of hiking trails that meander through the woods, along the river, and across fields. The main trail through the Nature Center was once a part of the interurban railroad. Activity courses offered through the Physical Education department allow you to have fun and earn units at the same time. Instructors teach a range of courses from bowling to ballroom dancing to body building. Library SecretsThe front door on the Stockwell side of the library is sealed off. To get into the library, you need to use the entrance on the Mudd side. Study rooms and carrels are hidden throughout the Stockwell tiers. They offer quiet spaces to do research and catch up on your reading.
You can go up and down between the floors in Stockwell by using the elevator in the tiers. It's next to the stairs, hidden behind a large door with a doorknob. You can check the availability of a book without even leaving your room. All you have to do is access the library catalog from any computer on the network through the library's home page. Searching the library catalog isn't the only thing you can do from your room. Through the library's Web site, you can request books from other libraries, read journal and newspaper articles, and even check out "virtual" books. Ask a librarian for details. The library has videos and DVDs you can check out for free with your student ID card. They are shelved to the left of the Mudd entrance. Wireless laptops can be checked out from the front desk of the library. There are twenty available. The wireless network is available from the Quad, making it possible to enjoy the sun and work on the internet or access your network drive at the same time. You may check out the computers for up to four hours at a time by presenting your student I.D. and signing a release form. Kellogg Center SecretsYou can call the KC Information Desk (x0000) to get any phone number on campus.
All incoming packages go through the Post Office in the KC. If you receive a package that needs a signature, you will either receive an e-mail or a phone call, and they will put a slip in your box. You can ship items via Federal Express through the Post Office in the KC. Just down the hall, UPS shipping is available through the bookstore. Other SecretsThe Day of Woden is on the last day of class during the spring semester. All the dining facilities move to the Quad for a picnic, and you can play fun games like human bowling and bungee runs. Fun community events let you take a break from your studies and give you a chance to mingle with Albion townsfolk. Every fall, the Festival of the Forks comes to downtown Albion to celebrate cultural diversity with foods and crafts from many nationalities. In the wintertime, the Cardboard Classic Sled Race brings sledders of all ages to the sledding hill in Victory Park.
Parents, friends, and other visitors can stay overnight at Bellemont Manor, a College-owned building south of campus. Lodging is available on a first-come, first-served basis, except on Homecoming and trustee weekends. Rates are comparable to local hotels. Dining and Hospitality Services has more information. Don't forget about Career Development. If you're still not sure what you want to be when you grow up, they have assessment tests you can take to match your skills and interests with possible careers. They also have summer job and internship listings available. Need help with writing your papers? Having trouble with a math class? Seek out the Academic Skills Center on the third floor of the Mudd building. The staff can help you with papers in the Writing Center, or with math in the Quantitative Skills Center. They also offer a Learning Support Center for students with learning disabilities. You can check your grades online through the ACIS system, before grades get sent out in the mail. Concerned about the environment? You can recycle magazines, office paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, and other items at recycling stations located in the residence halls. The Nature Center Web site has more details about the recycling program.
