Leslee Fritz, '94, has become the public face of the federal stimulus program in Michigan. She was appointed to head the Michigan Economic Recovery Office in February, and as a member of Governor Jennifer Granholm's executive team, reports daily to the governor on the proposed distribution of the $18 billion already allocated for Michigan. Fritz was the subject of a feature story by Ron Dzwonkowski published in the June 24 edition of the Detroit Free Press and she will be featured in the upcoming edition of Io Triumphe! magazine which will be delivered to mailboxes soon.
Sean Daly, '11, passed away Saturday, June 20. According to a June 24 article in the Jackson Citizen Patriot, Sean was described as a hard worker who planned to study business and economics in Ireland this winter, graduate a semester early from Albion College and head to law school. Vanessa McCaffrey and Kevin Metz, a pair of young chemistry professors at Albion College, have each received $50,000 grants from the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund (ACS-PRF) to cover the start-up costs of their laboratories.
McCaffrey's research has implications in magnetic storage devices and magnetic motors, while Metz is is looking for new ways to fabricate nanoscale catalysts, which could be used to remove toxins from the environment.
The Albion College education department and Albion Public Schools finished the academic year on a high note May 28 with their third annual Maymester "Showcase of Learning" in the Science Complex Atrium.

Albion Diversifies Student Body Through International Recruiting

Lewis Cardenas, '02, didn't have to complete tasks assigned by a producer or director to work around a detour or road block, but he still logged an amazing number of miles in an amazing race to direct a successful campaign geared toward diversifying the Albion College student body through international recruitment.
Through trips to the Middle East and Asia since joining the admission staff last summer, Cardenas' efforts will result in 30 international students and two American students living abroad joining the Albion community this fall.
