Jacob Rinkinen, '11, was working as a batboy for the Detroit Tigers during the 2008 season when he caught the attention of members of the organization in the clubhouse late after a game at Comerica Park one night.
Rinkinen, a double major in anthropology and sociology and chemistry at Albion College, was working on research for a paper with ‘Dimeji Togunde, the chair of the anthropology and sociology department. That paper, Agents of change: Gender Differences in Migration Intentions among University Undergraduates in Nigeria, was published in the International Journal of Interdisciplinary Social Sciences in August.
Albion is part of the art, with three members of the Art/Art
History department competing in Grand Rapids' ArtPrize competition
running through October 7. Assistant professor Gary Wahl and Curtis
artists-in-residence Jimmy Kuehnle and Mimi Kato each have entries in
the $250,000 competition.
Michigan State University's Samora Research Institute director Ruben Martinez will grace Albion with a talk entitled "Current Issues Facing Latino/as in Michigan” on Tuesday, Sept. 29, part of Albion's observance of Latino/a Heritage Month.
Dr. Al Pheley, director of the Gerald R. Ford Institute for Public Policy and Service, and Dr. Greg Saltzman, chair of the economics and management department, are leading a class this fall titled Health Policy in Canada and the U.S. The course addresses contemporary issues related to health insurance, public health problems that require behavioral changes and not just medical treatment, and racial and social class disparities in health outcomes. Albion College health and safety officials continue to monitor the H1N1 flu (swine flu) situation in the state and nation, keeping in contact with county and state health organizations. There have been no reported cases of swine flu on campus, and no changes in College operations or activities as a result of the outbreak.
