Albion Students Prepare for Mathematics Competitions

When most people think of competition at Albion College during the winter months scenes of the Dean Aquatic Center and Kresge Gymnasium come to mind. February, however, is a busy month in Palenske Hall as students in the mathematics and computer science department prepare for the International Mathematical Contest in Modeling and the Lower Michigan Mathematics Competition (LMMC).

While technology at Albion College is ubiquitous, one might look to stately Goodrich Chapel, home to the music department, as a haven of escape from the 21st century advances that have increased the pace of our lives. After all, how could technology alter the learning of music theory and keyboard skills?

Technology, however, has indeed transformed learning as Lia Jensen-Abbott, visiting assistant professor, is in the second year of using a lab of electronic keyboards in her theory courses.

Albion College students that journeyed to New Orleans during the break between semesters may have been accused of bringing unusually cold temperatures to the gulf coast if it weren’t for the good work they were there to accomplish. For the fourth year in a row, 40 members of Albion’s Student Volunteer Bureau (SVB) worked to restore homes wrecked by Hurricanes Rita and Katrina.
