Does sumo wrestling hold a secret for teaching and learning a new language? Waseda University professor Satoshi Miyazaki answers the question "Why do Foreign Sumo Wrestlers Speak Fluent Japanese?" on Monday, March 30, at 4 p.m. in Albion College's Olin Hall 112.
Miyazaki's research focuses on the ability of foreign sumo wrestlers in Japan to learn Japanese successfully in a short period of time, in comparison with other Japanese language learners. The talk will clarify their second language acquisition process and also convey suggestions to the field of Japanese as a second/foreign language education.
Miyazaki is professor and associate dean at the Graduate School of Japanese Applied Linguistics and director Institute of Australian Studies at Waseda University, one of Japan's top universities.
This presentation is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Albion College Modern Languages and Cultures department, 517/629-0207 or Japanese language instructor Takami Mohri at
