For the third year in a row, the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) has recognized Albion College with the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary service efforts and service to disadvantaged youth.
"I am very pleased that Albion College has been selected for the third year in a row," commented Albion College president Donna Randall. "Whether it is leading a local girl scout troop, underwriting the construction of a school building in Cameroon, or helping establish a supportive relationship with Cass Community Social Services in inner-city Detroit, Albion College students invest a great deal of time and energy in service and learning. It is an honor to have these contributions of our students, faculty, and staff be recognized by the President of the United States."
Launched in 2006, the Community Service Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement. During the 2007-08 school year, Albion's faculty, staff and students organized and participated in dozens of service programs, including work trips to Louisiana and Poland, an "Adopt-a-Family" Christmas program, the College-Albion Public Schools "Maymester" enrichment program, K-12 student mentoring programs and many more.
The Honor Roll is jointly sponsored by CNCS, through its Learn and Serve America program, and the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, USA Freedom Corps, and the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation.
“College students represent an enormous pool of idealism and energy to help tackle some of our toughest challenges,” said Stephen Goldsmith, vice chair of the Board of Directors of the Corporation for National and Community Service, which oversees the Honor Roll. “We salute Albion College for making community service a campus priority, and thank the millions of college students who are helping to renew America through service to others.”
Other Michigan institutions on the Honor Roll include Michigan State University, which was one of six Presidential Award winners; Alma College, Central Michigan University, Davenport University, Delta College, Eastern Michigan University, Grand Valley State University, Jackson Community College, Kalamazoo College, Kirtland Community College, Madonna University, Northern Michigan University, Olivet College, the University of Detroit-Mercy, the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan-Flint.
