Albion College Welcomes Guest Pianist Battersby Print E-mail

ALBION, Mich. — Intertwining classical and romantic musical tastes, Edmund Battersby, known internationally through recital, concert appearances, master classes and recordings, takes the stage on Sunday, April 13 at 8 p.m. in Goodrich Chapel at Albion College.

Born in America, Battersby studied at the Juilliard School of Music. When he graduated he took the Juilliard Alumni Prize with him and began performing with major orchestras in the United States, Mexico and South America as well as tours world-wide. Battersby has been a member of the Artist-faculty of the Jacobs School of Music of Indiana University since 1995. He is also the artistic director of The Artur Balsam Ensemble Classes for Piano and Strings held in Wabash, Indiana in the late spring. He plays teaching concerts for the Smithsonian Institution.

Lia Jensen-Abbott, accompanist and adjunct instructor of Albion College, stated: “Professor Battersby is the best teacher I have ever had. His knowledge and musical abilities are unparalleled, and he has an amazing way of communicating what he knows to his students. I am honored to have worked with him because he has made me a much better artist and teacher.”

For Albion, Battersby has selected pieces from Beethoven and Debussy to contemporary composers Arvo Part and Ferruccio Busoni. A highlight will be selections from Mendelssohn’s “Songs Without Words,” which is a series of eight volumes consisting of six "songs" each. These works were part of the Romantic tradition of writing short lyrical pieces for the piano.

This performance is free and open to the public. For a schedule of upcoming concerts visit our website at www.albion.edu/music or contact the Albion College Music department at 517/629-0481 or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
