Thanks to a $5,000 grant from the State Farm Good Neighbor Citizenship Company Grants Program, the Albion-area AmeriCorps Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) group will have the resources to better serve the community.

“We’re always looking for opportunities on a regular basis where we can impact the local community,” said Mark Putvin, the local Albion State Farm Insurance representative who presented the check to AmeriCorps VISTA coordinator Andrew French on April 18. “It’s an opportunity to step in and help.”

The grant will help fund five workshops to be conducted by VISTA volunteers that focus on educating community members in the areas of financial literacy and pathways to homeownership.

“Part of being a business owner in a community is asking, ‘How can we help?’” Putvin said.

Albion College received a three-year federal grant last May that will allow AmeriCorps VISTA volunteers to work with City and regional organizations to boost local economic development, education opportunities and health initiatives.
