Havens Family Continues Winning Tradition in Downriver Canoe Championships
WESSER, N.C. – Former Albion College swimming and diving coach Keith Havens and his son Zaak, ’10, continued the tradition of winning performances in the Whitewater Open Canoe Downriver National Championships. The event was held June 19-22 on the Nantahala River.
Zaak turned in the nation’s best overall time in the one-man distance event, completing the course in 56 minutes, 28 seconds. Keith posted the best time in the 55-and-over age division when he reached the finish in 58 ½ minutes.
In the one-man sprint, Keith won the 55-up class and produced the third-fastest overall time when he completed the course in 7:37. Zaak paddled the course in 7 minutes, 40 seconds to win the 19-39 age division.
In two-man events sprint event, Keith and Ed Sharp easily won their age group and had the fastest overall time in the nation. Havens and Sharp made quick work of the course, reaching the finish in 7:12. Zaak and Scott Dillery, ’83, were second in the 19-39 age division with a time of 7:30. In the two-person distance race, Keith and Sharp won the 55-up class, and were 2nd overall with a time of 54:51. Dillery and Zaak won the 19-39 class and were third overall, completing the course in 55:49.
