Hillsdale Faculty Jazz Sextet presents 'A Tribute to John Coltrane'

The Albion College Music department welcomes guest performers in the Hillsdale Faculty Jazz Sextet Wednesday, April 8 as they present some original as well as classic jazz tunes in tribute to the great saxophonist John Coltrane at 7:30 p.m. in Goodrich Chapel. Albion College's jazz combo 5:48 will open the program.

The program includes Coltrane's pieces "Grand Central" and "Moment's Notice," and a few pieces written by members of the Sextet, including alto saxophonist Jon Gerwirtz's piece "No Vacancy" and trumpet/director Chris McCourry's piece "The Dig."

Bassist James Ball, director of the Albion College Jazz Ensemble, commented: "I've very much enjoyed playing with the group this year. They are all exciting and versatile players whose solo work is terrific. The tunes by Chris McCourry and Jon Gerwirtz are fun and exciting and the audience should really enjoy them. I think this concert will be a great introduction to the music of the great Coltrane for those who don't know his music and a very good representation of his music for those that do."
