Marisa Fortuna, '07

Albion College and Gerstacker Institute alumna Marisa Fortuna, '07

Majored in Economics and Management, Spanish

Originally from Farmington Hills, Mich.

Now living in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Currently: Graduate student, Ford School of Public Policy, University of Michigan (2011-2013)

Previously: Communications Coordinator, Faurecia

What was your role and/or responsibilities?
While with Faurecia, I was responsible for the company's Mexico communications activities, including the internal corporate newsletter, public relations including press interviews and events, as well as other tasks related to the company's North America communications. After being in the professional world for 3.5 years, I have decided to pursue my Master's Degree in Public Policy at the University of Michigan. I began in Fall 2011 and am looking forward to this new challenge!

What was most valuable about your Gerstacker experience?
I always enjoyed attending the Gerstacker alumni events, listening to speakers who came to share their career story and experiences with us. It gave great perspective on what kind of path I wanted my own career to follow.

How did you feel about career outlook upon graduating from Albion? How did Gerstacker prepare you?
I was nervous but excited to be joining the "real world," as many students are! Gerstacker prepared me for my next step in the sense of having a solid support system, and networking resources to assist in many ways. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the student to find a job that is a good fit for him or her, but Gerstacker definitely helped to give me options.

What did you enjoy most during your time as a student in the Gerstacker Institute?
Summer school was undoubtedly the best part of Gerstacker. The lasting relationships that were formed with classmates, professors, and staff, not to mention the fun that we had, is something that I will always treasure!

Do you have any advice for prospective students interested in business and management?
Don't underestimate the importance of knowing a foreign language! In this increasingly global society, it can only serve as an asset. My knowledge of Spanish was an important part of my first job and was a key factor in getting hired over other candidates.
