I have always believed that knowledge of history is essential for compassionate and effective engagement in the world. My recent teaching and scholarship on the Holocaust has opened up my—our—work with students, from the lecture hall and the seminar room to an overgrown Jewish cemetery in Wrocław, Poland. Building a community of memory in Wrocław and Albion has been a labor of learning that teaches the lesson of how knowledge can help repair the world.
