Albion College Alumna Celebrates Natural Hair in Art Exhibit “Never a Bad Hair Day” (October 2017 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm)

Angie Redmond, ‘09, is excited to bring her show “Never a Bad Hair Day” to the Bobbitt Visual Arts Center beginning on Tuesday, Oct. 17. Consisting of 21 paintings the exhibition will run until Saturday, Nov. 18 with a special opportunity to meet the artist and hear her spoken word poetry during Albion College’s Homecoming events on Saturday, Oct. 21 from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. at Redmond’s reception in Bobbitt.

Drawing on her senior art showcase at Albion College, “Crowning Glory,” Redmond explains that her new show is a celebration of the natural hair movement within the African American community. The collection features hairstyles of men and women, modern styles, and traditional hairstyles of various African nations.

Redmond explains, “My art in general is about unapologetically being yourself. Having natural hair myself, I have faced a lot of ridicule and negative views towards my coils. Drawing from those experiences I create paintings and drawings to celebrate natural hair for its distinctiveness and beauty.”

This exhibit is free and the public is invited to attend. For more information, contact the Albion College Art Department at 517/629-0246 or .

Albion College Music Ensembles Continue Tradition of Homecoming Concert (October 2017 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm)

The excitement of Albion’s Homecoming festivities continues after the fourth quarter has ended, as the Albion College Concert Choir, Briton Singers, Symphony Orchestra, and Jazz Ensemble come together in performance at 8 p.m. on Saturday, October 21 in Goodrich Chapel for the Music Department’s Homecoming Concert.

Each ensemble brings a unique sound and repertoire to the stage, with just a few of pieces including the Concert Choir’s “Circus Band” by Charles Ives and a traditional Haitian folk melody “Peze Kafé.” Briton Singers offer an exploration through a variety of genres ranging from Renaissance composer Hans Leo Hassler’s “Dixit Maria” to James Taylor’s “Lonesome Road.” The Jazz Ensemble will provide a mix of celebrated jazz composers and styles, while the Symphony Orchestra plays Modest Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain. This concert is free and the public is invited to attend. For more information, contact the Albion College Music Department at 517/629-0481 or .
