Anna Howard Shaw, undatedOne of Albion's most prestigious and colorful alumna, the Rev. Dr. Anna Howard Shaw (left), is the focus of a new biography by Trisha Franzen, Albion College professor of women's and gender studies. Franzen will discuss Shaw's life and the significance of her accomplishments as Albion's Anna Howard Shaw lecturer Tuesday, March 25, at 7:30 p.m. in the College's Bobbitt Visual Arts Center.

A pioneer girl who put herself through college, seminary and medical school, Shaw rose to the national stage as a suffragist, serving as president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. As an unmarried professional woman from a Midwestern background, Shaw both defied and reshaped contemporary ideas about roles and expectations of women in society.

Franzen came to Albion College in 1992 as an adjunct history professor and director of the Anna Howard Shaw Center for Women's Studies and Programs. She has been a professor of women's and gender studies since 2003. Franzen created and directs Albion's successful Wildcat Gardens, an outgrowth of research programs she developed with Albion College students working with girls in the community. She is a graduate of the State University of New York Buffalo, and holds master's and doctoral degrees from the University of New Mexico.

Franzen's book, Anna Howard Shaw: The Work of Woman Suffrage, will be released by University of Illinois Press in mid-March.
