About Pre-Season Camp & Percussion/Guard Camp
The percussion line and color guard, because of the
extra workload that is required, will be getting started before the rest
of the band. From Wednesday, August 12th through Friday, August 15th, both
groups will come to campus early to work on their section's extras:
Percussion - cadences, warm-ups, technique, stands
tunes, drum grooves
Guard - pre-game and show routines for the first 3 shows
The British Eighth traditionally holds a week long
pre-season camp to prepare for the upcoming football season. This year's
camp is scheduled from Saturday, August 15th through Friday, August 21st.
If you plan to be in marching band, you are required to be at camp. During this camp,
marching band members learn all of the basics specific to the British
Eighth including the traditional "British Eighth Step" that has become
its trademark, all Pre-Game music, and the drill and music for the first
half-time show of the season. In addition, band members learn all stands
music and cheers (led by the Spirit Leader) to be used during the
football games.
"Forced Fun" activities are planned throughout the
week at the end of each day's rehearsal as a way to relax, acquaint and
reacquaint yourselves with friends new and old. Past activities have
included scavenger hunts, extreme Frisbee football, the band bon fire,
Band Olympics, and the annual trip
to Laud's Ice Cream Parlor.
All band members will be
expected to check-in by Saturday, August 15th. More
detailed information will be included in the 2009 British Eighth Newsletter
which is released in July.
Band camp is totally free! Housing and meals
are paid for by the school for the entire time students are at camp.
