The Westbrook Scholarship

Back to Audition Information

History of the Westbrook Scholarship:
The Westbrook Music Scholarship was established as an endowed scholarship in 1989 through a bequest by Katherine K. Westbrook, Class of 1916. In her will, Mrs. Westbrook stipulated that the income from the endowment be used “to provide scholarships for students majoring in music.” The scholarship was awarded for the first time to a high school student who entered Albion College in the fall of 1990.

The Westbrook Scholarship has traditionally been a $3000 scholarship that is guaranteed for all four years of college. The number of scholarships awarded in any given year varies depending on the number of returning recipients.

Specific Audition Requirements:
Students must 1) audition for the scholarship, as well as 2) write a short essay and 3) provide three letters of recommendation.

1) The audition must be performed on the Albion College campus and consist of three contrasting movements or short compositions totaling about 10-12 minutes of music, preferably memorized; with accompaniment, if needed.

2) The essay should tell us about yourself, why you wish to study music, your goals in life, interests outside of music, why you wish to come to Albion, how you see yourself contributing and participating in music at Albion, the kind of person you are and would like to become, why you are applying for the Westbrook Music Scholarship, and any other information that would be of interest to the music faculty.

3) Westbrook applicants must furnish three recommendations from people who know you well. This may include your high school music teacher, private music teacher, and high school principal or counselor. Please inform your references to either e-mail or fax their recommendation letters to the Albion College Music Department at music@albion.edu or 517-629-0784.

Terms and Conditions of the Westbrook Scholarship:
The recipient(s) of the Westbrook Music Scholarship must agree to abide by the following conditions:

The student(s) must:

1. Continue as a music major. If the music major is dropped, the Westbrook scholarship will be rescinded or reduced.

2. Maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average in music courses and remain in good standing academically.

3. Provide exemplary contribution within the Music Department in either a major performing ensemble or as an accompanist.
