by Catherine Fontana, Chapter President; Rachel Lippert, Vice President;

Chelsea Mason, Alumni Relations

ALBION, MI – The Chevron Chapter of at Albion College was presented with the Silver Torch Award and the Project Excellence Award for the 2006-2007 academic year at the organization’s national conference.  The Albion College chapter was one of 51 chapters to take home the Silver Torch Award, selected for their timeliness and dedication while exemplifying the ideals of scholarship, leadership and service. Catherine Fontana, current chapter president, accepted the award on behalf of the group.

The chapter also received a Project Excellence Award for dedication to the Mortar Board national project, “Reading is Leading,” which corresponded to Albion College’s 2007 Homecoming theme, “Share Your Story.” The chapter volunteered and actively contributed to the Albion College Homecoming book drive by engaging alumni, students, faculty and staff in this endeavor.  The chapter collected 1,000 children’s books and monetary donations for Albion’s two elementary schools and the Albion District Library. The success of the book drive could not have been possible without the efforts of the 2006-07 Executive Board members Bethany Bierlein and Beth Wylin The Chevron Chapter was one of only 24 chapters to receive the Project Excellence Award.

Upcoming Spring Service!

by Catherine Fontana, Chapter President

We all know that seniors do not go out without a bang, and our class of Mortar Board members is of no exception.  Since July, we have been planning these three exceptional events for this Spring.

          Our first service event, the Albion Reads Initiative, will start during national Mortar Board Week (Feb. 10-16, 2008).  From February until May, Mortar Board seniors will sponsor a book program at Harrington Elementary School of Albion with the goals of developing a passion for reading and promoting reading outside the classroom.  A graduation ceremony will be held in May to commemorate each student’s passage to a new level of reading competency.  The current Chevron Chapter developed this project as a yearly ‘staple’ service project unique to Albion and to our community.  I wish to extend a special thanks to Rachel Lippert, our Vice President, in organizing this transformative service opportunity.

The Albion Reads Initiative is part of a larger statewide movement among other Michigan Mortar Board chapters to become involved with reading and literacy within their respective school districts.  Each chapter has planned different service events within their schools with the main goal of connecting Mortar Board seniors with their communities to encourage reading.  Chapters across the state are energized by this opportunity to give back and to support our communities’ children.

Finally, our chapter will be hosting “Auction-A-Prof” in April as a fundraiser.  Professors will be auctioned off to the highest bidder in exchange for our professors’ special talents, which range from home-cooked desserts or dinner to five-minute explanations of organic chemistry.  This is a first for the Chevron Chapter, and we anticipate that it will draw a memorable, satisfied crowd!  For further information on this fundraising event, please contact Joel Pier-Fitzgerald, our chapter’s treasurer.
