History| Learn about Albion College's Chevron ChapterOur local Chevron chapter of Mortar Board was established at Albion College in 1935. Since then it has grown and sponsored various events on campus to shape scholarship, leadership, and service. The national Mortar Board service project is Reading is Leading. To kick this program off on a local level, the Chevron Chapter has been focusing on an Albion Reads Initiative. One exciting event hosted in the beginning of the school year was the 2007 Homecoming Reading is Leading Book Drive. This semester, our chapter plans to continue with the Albion Reads Initiative by reading to students in the local schools and by co-hosting a Creative Writing Workshop during Little Sibs Weekend (February 29-March 2). Applications for the Sophomore of the Year Award are sent out in the early fall and the honoree is announced at the Family Weekend Convocation in late October. Mortar Board as a national organization was founded in 1918 as the first national honor society for senior college women. The Society opened its membership to men in 1975. Mortar Board stresses a continued commitment to service of the campus community as well as to the global community. Mortar Board uses the Greek letters Pi, Sigma, and Alpha to represent the ideals of Service, Scholarship, and Leadership. Mortar Board has recently joined efforts with BrailleInk, which creates children's books with Braille added to the original print as well as illustrations. They are also partnered with First Book, an organization which works toward giving children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own new books.
