History:
The
Albion College Mathematical Society was created in the fall 2003 in response to
the growing interest in mathematical sciences on campus. In anticipation of the
growing size of each incoming freshman class and the science center renovation
project, Albion College students of mathematics are taking steps to strengthen
the student mathematical community on campus through this organization.
That is, the organization is here to highlight the student mathematical
community and its activities. We hope that in the near future, this vision will
provide the Albion College community with programs, events, and benefits which
support those who are interested in mathematics, thereby strengthening and
unifying the student mathematical community of the future.
Since
this organization is less than a year old, it provides current students with an
immediate opportunity; namely, to visibly change the student math community in
positive ways through this group. Therefore, we encourage and invite you to get
as involved with this organization as possible, and we hope that this gives
everyone a chance to explore different ideas that they might have for the
mathematics community on campus.
Purpose:
The Albion College Mathematical Society will provide the Albion College
community with programs, events, and benefits which support those who are
interested in mathematics. These interests include (but are not limited
to) the application of mathematics in the real world, strengthening Albion
College as a center for mathematical students' excellence in the Midwest,
examining the role of mathematics in popular culture, the history and
development of mathematics, and an appreciation of mathematics in general. You
