Here's what I've been doing since I retired.

I retired in May 2004 to pursue my research interests in writing translators of less commonly taught languages to help people learn them.  In the summer of 2004 I started studying Quichua, the Ecuadorian version of the language of the Incan nation, and writing a basic trial version of a translator from Spanish to English to Quichua, and one from Quichua to English (both still under heavy construction).  I spent the spring semester 2005 teaching math at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito and studying Quichua there.  As I learned a sentence pattern, I would adapt the program to handle that pattern.  You can see some of the sentence patterns in the help file. Now that I'm back, I'm separating the Spanish to English to Quichua program into one from Spanish to Quichua and another from English to Quichua.

This was a very interesting project in many ways.  It gave me a chance to make use of all the things I had learned while writing the earlier translators, and also forced me to look at how to handle input from various kinds of keyboards (English and Spanish).  And best of all, I got a chance to learn a beautiful language from a great teacher and speak it with interesting people!

Soon I will put up some of the thousand pictures I took in Ecuador.  :-)

This was my schedule the last semester I taught at Albion.   I hate to throw away a good link.  But soon I will weed out a lot of them...
