Algebraic Coding Theory

Apply your knowledge of mathematics to the world of error-correcting and error-detecting codes. Learn about mathematical codes that are used in supermarket scanners, compact disk players, the World-Wide Web, and photos from Mars.

Topics include:

• an overview of the main problems associated with coding theory
• reducing the probability of messages being received incorrectly
• finite fields and the vector spaces over them
• linear codes, Hamming codes, perfect codes, cyclic codes
• brief excursions into Latin squares and Fano planes
