Math Camp. Entering and returning math enthusiasts participate in a variety of social and recreational activities related to mathematics.
Math/Physics/Chemistry/Geology Picnic. Come join faculty and staff of the Science Complex for a free picnic. Experience homemade root beer brewed by the Math Camp participants under the direction of brewmaster Bob Messer, and see Chef Paul Anderson once again perform his culinary magic at the charcoal grill. The outstanding first-year student of 1995-96 will be recognized at the picnic. Who knows, there may even be a quiz. Sign us in the Math office so we know how much food to prepare.
Undergraduate Conference at Miami University. A group of mathematics students and faculty travel to Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. The theme of this year's conference is Statistics. Contact Paul Anderson if you are interested in participating.
Michigan Autumn Take-Home Challenge. Teams of students work on a set of ten interesting problems. Albion's teams have placed third in 1994 and second in 1995 in this competition. Caroline Scott and Marc Drummond are the members of this year's MATH Challenge team.
Fifty-seventh Annual William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition. Your final exams will be a breeze in comparison to the Putnam exam. Out of 120 points, you have the right to brag about any positive score. Last year the combined scores of the top three Albion College participants placed us 63rd in the country. Members of this year's team are Brad Emmons, Jamie Kucab, and Art Bragg.
Colloquium. Brad Emmons tells about his Oak Ridge Experience and his work on "Cooperative Multi-Robot Observation of Multiple Moving Targets."
Friday Afternoon Mathematics Tea. Not content with being merely the Harvard of Calhoun County, Albion's Math Department will emulate this social event of the Math Department at Princeton. The Real Analysis class will be the hosts for the first Math Tea, Friday at 3:10 in Norris 109. Bring your friends.
Mathematical Modeling Competition. Scott Dillery is coaching two teams of students in preparation for a weekend of working on an open-ended problem in applied mathematics. Art Bragg, Sally Goff, and Phil Shaltis are the members of one team. Emily Duke, Brad Emmons, and Joe Smith are the members of a second team.
Colloquium. Joseph Buckley, Professor of Mathematics at Western Michigan University, will give us the inside scoop about groups. He will present some basic examples and weave a bit of historical background into his talk, "Finite Symmetry Groups: An Introduction". He will also bring us the latest news about Robert Ellerbruch who is currently a graduate student in the Math/Stat Department at WMU.
Denison Spring Programming Contest. Our team, the Asbestos Longjohns, consisting of Phil Dietrich, Jamie Kucab, and Brad Emmons will travel to Denison University to match wits with other students in the seventh annual event. Contact Dave Reimann if you are interested.
Friday Afternoon Mathematics Tea. The Differential Equations class will be the hosts for the second Math Tea, Friday at 3:10 in Norris 109. This promises to be a contentious meeting as Matt Sederburg and Bob Messer try to convince the other tea drinkers that .9999··· is not equal to 1. Bring your friends.
Friday Afternoon Mathematics Tea.
The Mathematics Department will be the hosts of this tea and will
be discussing the mathematics of pizza, and information about
fall mathematics courses Friday at 3:15 in Norris 109.
All Math majors, Computational Math majors, Math/Physics majors, Math/Econ
majors, prospective majors, and friends of the department are invited.
Come early. Stay as long as you like.Lower Michigan Mathematics Competition. Teams of three students
represent small colleges in lower Michigan in solving a set of ingenious
math problems. Albion College was the
host of the 1996 LMMC. This year Emily Duke, Brad Emmons,
and Joe Smith will represent Albion College.
Lawrence Technological University in Southfield will host the competition.

Mathematics Tea and Ice Cream Social.
The menu expands to include ice cream with Redi-Whip®
and other popular toppings at the fourth Math Tea of the semester.
Bring your ideas for Mathematics Awareness Week, the spring Math Picnic,
and Math Camp. Get the latest word on our search for Paul Anderson's
sabbatical replacement, and the exciting news about enhanced computer
facilities for next fall. Bring your friends: Friday at 3:10 in Norris 109.
Mathematics Colloquium.
The first candidate for Paul Anderson's sabbatical leave position
will be talking on "Linear Coding Theory" at 3:33pm in Norris 109.
There will also be an opportunity for students to meet with the candidate
after the talk. Student comments have provided us with valuable insights
about candidates in past searches, and we hope you will be able to
participate in the process this year. Even if you cannot attend the
entire colloquium, please catch as much of it as your schedule permits.
Of course, the Math Department will live up to our tradition of providing
swell .
Mathematics Awareness Week. The Joint Policy Board for Mathematics has selected "Mathematics and the Internet" as the 1997 MAW theme. This theme includes such subjects as computer security and encryption, data mining, network analysis, information theory, and the availability of mathematical information on the World-Wide Web and other technologies. Mathematics Awareness Week materials, including the MAW poster and visuals, are available at the MAW Web site.

International Plaid Day.
One of the highlights of Mathematics Awareness Week at Albion College is
International Plaid Day. We have contacted people around the world who
will join faculty, students, and staff on campus in wearing plaid to show
their support of mathematics. Brushes and paint will be provided for
those who want to give the Rock a suitable color scheme.
Mathematics Colloquium.
The second candidate for Paul Anderson's sabbatical leave position
will be talking on "The Price We Pay for Symmetry" at 3:33pm in Norris 109.
Of course, the Math Department will continue our tradition of providing
swell .
Computer Club Speaker.
The Albion College Computer Club presents Bob Wray, from the University of
Michigan Department of Computer Science. He will be talking about
Artificial Intelligence and Neural Networks
at 8:00 pm Norris 109. The Math Department will provide artificial
refreshments.
Forever Plaid. Get ready for the final Plaid Day of the semester, and join us for a trip to this production by the BoarsHead Theater in Lansing. Thanks to a subsidy from Dan Meyer's office, tickets are $3 for Albion College students, faculty, and staff ($10 for other guests). Make your reservation with Alison Yarger, Math Department secretary, before spring break. Linear Algebra students can gain a deeper understanding of the meaning of plaid.
Francis: Holy Cannoli! We're finally back on earth!Smudge: We're late! Sparky: Are we still dead? Francis: Technically, yes. This delightful fifties-music romp features a charming young quartet reunited in the Great Beyond after a fatal accident on the way to pick up their new plaid tux jackets. Just released after a national tour, productions have run for years in Chicago and other major cities. Here's one of those musicals so perfect for the BoarsHead stage. |
