One of the topics we study in Chance is casino gambling--it's an excellent source of examples, and an issue of some importance these days. Toward that end, we have acquired a Double Diamond slot machine, manufactured by International Gaming Technologies. It makes a classroom appearance each November, and gets considerable play from visitors to my office. While the machine's top payoff is 2500 quarters ($625), the top prize won so far (recorded on Saturday, 3 September 02005) is 110 coins ($27.50), on two separate pay lines:
Line 2 paid 100 (25 × 4, with the multiplier arising from two Double Diamond logos which function as wild cards as well as multipliers), and line 3 kicked in for an additional 10 (5 for 3 bars, multiplied by two for the other Double Diamond logo).
