The James R. Lancaster, Sr. Award

The prize is to be awarded to a junior (but in special cases may be awarded to a senior) mathematics or computer science major at Albion College.

The student should have excelled academically in both the mathematics or computer science curriculum and in other elective courses. However, since a mathematics and computer science education are perhaps some of the most difficult academic pursuits, emphasis on grade point should not be so great as to prove prohibitive. Electing to major in mathematics or computer science is itself a substantial commitment, especially to an individual with interests in other areas. Emphasis should be on the individuals overall diligence and intellectual curiosity.

The following are indications, though not an exclusive list, of the type of activities this prize seeks to award:

  1. Academic interests typifying a commitment to the liberal arts
    1. Participation in a non-science academic program like the Gerald R. Ford Institute, the Professional Management Program, or the new Ethics Institute, or;
    2. An Honors Thesis in a non-mathematical subject area or, preferably, a thesis which involves mathematics or computer science in a liberal arts context, or;
    3. A major in a non-science discipline together with the mathematics or computer science major.
  2. Extracurricular Activities
    1. Activities which show a concern for campus life, such as the Student Senate, Union Board (Committee Chair, Executive Board position, or the like), or;

    2. Activities which show spiritual development or a concern for the welfare of one's fellow man, such as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Vine, or the Starr Commonwealth program.

A blend of academic interests and extracurricular activities, which demonstrate both intellectual and personal breadth, is desirable.
