Laboratory 3: Microsoft Word 2000

Due dates and times:

     Part 1:Wednesday, January 16, 02002, 5:00:00 P.M.

    Part 2: Friday, January 18, 02002, 10:10:00 A.M.

We assume that you have developed some familiarity with the fundamentals of word processing by this point in your Albion career. This laboratory will focus on two more advanced features available in Word2000: tables and outlining.  We shall be using tutorials, in .pdf form, that have been prepared at University College, Canterbury Christ Church, in England. The entire series may be found on their website: http://www.cant.ac.uk/title/tutorials/PDF/Word2000.htm .

Before starting, create a new folder called Laboratory 3 in the CS 151 folder you have already created on your H: drive.

The two tutorials that we will be using may be found by going to the W: drive and then opening, successively, the following folders:

Math
CSci 151 - S2002
Laboratory 3

Part 1: Within this last folder, open the file w2000p6.pdf. It will open in Adobe Acrobat Reader. Keep that window open and from the Start menu open Microsoft Word 2000. Save your Word document to your H: drive as Lab3doc1.  Before doing anything else, type your name and the date in the new Word document. Save your work frequently.

You will be able to switch back and forth between the two windows so that you can follow directions.  Note well these additional instructions:

Page 1: Create the table with only the header row and the first 6 lines of data (through the mysterious Mr. Major of Geography).

Page 2: Follow all directions.

Page 3: Add a row, but instead of the indicated data, add your name, major, and telephone extension.  Under "Inserting a column", simply add a new column--you need not enter any new data.

Page 4: Follow all directions.

Page 5: Create a new table below yours with the indicated structure (Superscripts can be accessed through the Format menu under Font...)

Page 6: Follow only the directions for borders--it is not necessary at this time to work through Shading.  (Read it sometime, though.)

When you're finished, print the document (which should have your name on it) and hand it in.  Minimize all open windows, insert your floppy disk, and copy the file for this lab from your H: drive to the floppy. Now you can access your file even if you are using a computer not attached to the Albion College network.

Part 2: Go back to the W: drive and open the tutorial on outlining (w2000p7.pdf). Create a new Word 2000 document and save that as Lab3doc2 to the folder Laboratory 3. Again, begin by typing your name and the date in the document.

Follow all of the directions as written.

When you have finished the second tutorial, copy the file to your diskette, print the file, and hand it in.
