Abstract |
Justin Glathart was chair of the
physics department at Albion College from 1947-1962. His wife,
Mary Jane, was actively involved with Delta Zeta Sorority on
campus and helped to plan the first Festival of the Forks. Their
collection concerns Mary's involvement in Delta Zeta, as well as
Jay's research, teaching and education. |

Biographical Note
Justin "Jay" Glathart came to Albion College to teach physics in 1947.
He had experience teaching at other colleges and universities prior to
his arrival in Albion. He was chair of the department from 1947 to 1962.
He also served as the president of the American Association of Physics
Teachers, Michigan Section, and was a visiting professor of physics at
Arizona State University. He passed away at the age of 91 in 1994.
Mary
Jane Glathart taught vocal music in the Albion Public School system from
1947-1959. She married Justin Glathart in 1958. She was active in the
Albion community, working with the Albion Women's Clubs and helping to
plan the first Festival of the Forks. She was also involved on the
college campus, with Delta Zeta Sorority, serving on the House
Corporation and in the Alumnae Association, and working in both the
Registrar's and Admissions Offices. She passed away at the age of 75 in
2001.
Scope & Content
The Justin and Mary Jane Glathart Collection covers the years 1929 to
1981. The collection is primarily comprised of lecture notes, research,
and sorority-related materials. There are publications, correspondence,
and miscellaneous items as well. Many of the documents deal with physics
and Delta Zeta.
The
collection consists of three series with eight subseries:

Series Description
Series I: Personal Correspondence 1970
This series is a collection of letters addressed to the Glatharts
from Mrs. E. Walton during 1970.
Series II: Greek Documents 1953-1973, n.d.
Included in this series are documents concerning Delta Zeta
Sorority. Mary Jane Glathart served on the House Corporation Board and
was involved in their Alumnae Association. Contained within this series
are five subseries, including Legal and Fiscal Documents, Membership,
Memorabilia, Photographs and Publications. The
subseries are arranged chronologically where appropriate. Items of note
include documents
regarding the closing of the Albion College chapter of Delta Zeta in the
early 1970s, as well as several composite photographs of the sorority.
Series III: Lecture Notes, Research,
Publications 1929-1981
This series is arranged chronologically and includes notes,
research, and publications on a variety of physics and other
science-related subjects written by Justin Glathart. The lecture notes
are primarily Glathart's personal notes from courses taken at such
institutions as the University of Chicago and the University of
Michigan. Research found in this series is that of Glathart from his
years as a student as well as his time as a professor.
