Jacqueline
Maag was born February 27, 1922, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Jacob and Frieda
(Huber) Maag. She received her bachelor’s degree from Northwestern
University in 1945 and her master’s degree in 1948, also from
Northwestern. Maag undertook additional study at the Konservatorium in
Zurich, Switzerland, the University of Colorado, and the University of
Michigan. She was a student of Ria Ginster and Axel Schiotz.
Jacqueline
Maag--known affectionately as "Jackie"--served on the College's music
faculty for 38 years and was a longtime Albion resident. She joined the
Albion College Music Department in 1948, teaching voice and music
history. She
retired in 1986 and continued to serve on the applied music faculty of
the College for several years.
In 1986, friends, colleagues and former students established the
Jacqueline Maag Prize in Music History at Albion College. The monetary
prize is awarded annually to an outstanding student in music history who
has demonstrated a genuine scholarly and creative approach to the study
of music history.
Jackie passed away in October of 2004 at her home. She was 82.
The Jacqueline Maag Collection spans the years 1929-2004, with the bulk
of the materials from the 1950s-80s. The collection is primarily
comprised of concert programs, related to her own performances and those
of fellow faculty members, students, and guest performers of Albion
College. Through these programs, audio recordings, awards and
certificates, a scrapbook, teaching materials, and newspaper articles,
one gets a fairly comprehensive look at Jacqueline Maag's life and
accomplishments.
