Historical Note
The Rollin M. Gerstacker International House was constructed on the
Albion
College campus during the years 1969-1971. The building was designed with
the
idea of creating a unique living-learning environment that would serve as
a residence
hall for students interested in foreign languages and international issues
and provide
an opportunity for immersion in a foreign language. The I-House, as the
building is
known, also was intended to serve as a center for international students
on campus
and a home building for special programs of an international nature. The
building
also has been home to the Center for International Education since its
construction. Major funding for construction came as a gift from the
Rollin M.
Gerstacker Foundation, presented by Dr. Carl A. Gerstacker and his mother,
Eda
U. Gerstacker.
French, German, and Spanish are the resident languages of the I-House,
with one
residential wing of the building being devoted to each language. The
architectural
design of the building was intended draw from many cultural traditions.
Scope & Content

years 1961 to
the present, with the bulk of the collection after 1969. The collection

overview of the evolution of the I-House’s physical structure and
living/learning
mission since its construction (1969-1971). Together, these documents
provide a
picture of the student communities that have been central to the life of
the I-House
since its construction.

Series Description
Series I, Alumni Activities, contains flyers, invitations, other
publicity materials,
press clippings, and correspondence relating to receptions and reunions
held for
I-House alumni. This series is arranged chronologically. Many documents
pertain
to the I-House's Twenty-Fifth Anniversary Reception and Open House for
alumni in
1995, which also was the occasion for a dedication ceremony marking the
naming
of the I-House courtyard in honor of the late Dr. Henry Rottenbiller,
professor of
modern languages and Albion's first director of off-campus programs.
Henry's
Mountain, a sculpture created by Rottenbiller's daughter, Loretta
Rottenbiller
Guynn, '81, in honor of her father, was dedicated at this time as well.
Series II, Facility/Educational Mission History, is arranged
chronologically. The
earliest documents make reference to the independent language houses on
Albion's
campus that pre-dated the existence of the I-House.
Letters, memos, proposals, and college publications from the late 1960s
reveal
initial ideas and plans for the creation of an internationally-themed
residence hall on
Albion’s campus. Later documents pertain to the development of the
building’s
physical structure as well as its educational mission, and provide
evidence of the
different models that have been proposed over the years to help further
the success
of the facility’s language-learning mission. Correspondence and
publicity materials
give a view of the building dedication ceremonies in 1971. The series also
contains
floor plans and artist’s renderings of the building, as well as a
photograph of
dignitaries who attended the dedication ceremonies.
Series III, International Students, contains semester lists of
international
students at Albion, as well as local press reports about these students.
Additional
documents pertain to orientation procedures for international students
arriving on
campus, and the Foreign Student Board.
Series IV, International Week, contains committee information,
publications and
copies of e-mail concerning International Week organization and
activities. The
information dates from 1982-2002 and covers such countries and regions as
the
Soviet Union, Sub-Saharan Africa, Korea, Japan, China, Europe and Latin
America.
Series V, Off-Campus Programs, contains semester lists of students
who have
participated in off-campus programs at Albion College. These documents
provide a
listing of the off-campus programs with which Albion has been affiliated
over the
years. The series also contains memos and correspondence relating to
off-campus
policies.
Series VI, Publications, contains informational newsletters
published by I-House
residents. Newsletters date from 1971 to the present, and provide an
overview of
I-House programs and student activities. With the exception of “I-House
Insights,” a
newsletter written 1983-84 by the I-House staff head resident, the
newsletters have
been written by student residents, often by the Vice President of the
I-House
Council. This series also contains brochures and press clippings from the
local
media relating to the I-House.
Series VII, Personnel, contains past and present job descriptions
of I-House staff
positions, as well as several head resident year-end reports. Press
clippings about
I-House personnel are also included in this series.
Series VIII, Residents and Resident Selection Procedures, contains
semester
lists of I-House residents and their room assignments. Dated documents are
in
chronological order. The series also contains correspondence and
guidelines
regarding procedures for selecting residents.
Series IX, Student Activities, contains semester lists of I-House
Council
members (1987-present), as well as constitutions of the various
internationally-themed student clubs and I-House governing bodies that
have
existed throughout the years. Semester calendars of I-House programs and
activities, meeting minutes and agenda, program flyers, invitations to
language
house dinners, and other related materials are included in this series.
