Historical Note

The Lecture-Concert Series of Albion College ran for forty-two years (1959-92 as the Lecture-Concert Series and 1993-2001 as the Albion Performing Artist and Lecture Series), bringing scientists, musicians, politicians, activists and other notable figures to campus to lecture or perform for the college and community.  In addition, an accompanying series of films was shown throughout the school year.

"Guided in part by an annual questionnaire distributed through [the] college community, a small committee under the chairmanship of Dr. Keith Fennimore continued to bring to the campus a succession of high caliber cultural events." (Fennimore, Keith. The Albion College Sesquicentennial History: 1835-1985, Albion College, 1985, p.642)

The series was organized by a committee of faculty, and later, students, under the direction of English professor Keith Fennimore, who was the program's chairman from the opening of the series until his retirement in 1983.  Admittance to these events was free for Albion students, faculty and staff, and the community was invited to purchase tickets or season passes.  Lectures, performances and film showings still take place at Albion, but they are now sponsored or co-sponsored by various campus institutes, departments, groups and organizations instead of by a single body.

The creation of the Student Union Board and its popular music concerts caused ticket sales for Lecture and Concert Series events to dwindle, and, in 1966, the Series was changed to the Fine Arts Program. (Fennimore, 644)

At a later date, the name of the program was changed back to the Lecture and Concert Series, but there is not a record of when that occurred, or when it became part of the Union Board, as it is currently.
