During the first administration of Dr. George B. Jocelyn, second
president of Albion College (1864-1869, 1871-1877), the Michigan State
Legislature passed an act creating the separate college entity, the
Endowment Fund Committee. The act was passed on March 2, 1865.
The Endowment Fund Committee was designated to deal with the
control of endowment monies for the college. The Committee was to be
composed of three lay persons, two representing the Methodist Episcopal
Church. "The Endowment Fund Committee was given authority to
invest interest money in the endowment fund so that it would bear interest
and to pay that interest to the treasurer of the Board of Trustees of
Albion College at regular intervals." (Robert Gildart, Albion
College, 1835-1960: A History, Albion College, 1961: 109)
The
Records of the Endowment Fund Committee
cover the years 1912 to 1919. The collection is primarily comprised of
correspondence and deeds, related to land purchases by the college. The Collection consists of 2 series:
Series I: Correspondence The Correspondence series primarily consists of letters
between Samuel Dickie, fifth president of Albion College (1901-24), Judge
Clement Smith, legal representative for Albion College, and farmers owning
land assessment costs to Albion College. In particular, William
Goodsite was one farmer involved in the sale of the Hills Farm as part of
the buy-off of his land assessment on the property. Folders 1-3
contain letters documenting the transactions of the purchase of the Hills
Farm by Albion College on January 1, 1916, among other pieces of property.
Another farmer's land transaction with the College is specified in a
letter dated November 18, 1918, written by Clement Smith to James H.
Nagle, describing the monies still owed to Albion College by Mr. Nagel.
This letter is located in Folder 1.
