Albion College Principals & Presidents
The friends of Albion college rejoice in the belief that a new era of prosperity and usefulness has dawned in the election of Hon. Samuel Dickie, LL.D., to the presidency in June 1901. Few men are more occupied with business affairs than he, and it is a matter for great congratulation that he could assume the additional onerous responsibility of this office at a crucial time in the history of the institution. At this time only the merest outline can be given of a busy life, which, by its integrity and success, has so impressed itself upon the community, the state and the nation, that when a president was sought for Albion college Dr. Dickie was at once recognized as the one man for the position, provided that he could be prevailed upon to accept it. His long years of loyal and active service for the college, the confidence reposed in him by his business associates and friends, and his wide experience with men and affairs, had fitted him in an unusual degree for this position. In all his efforts for the upbuilding of the college he has been ably seconded by Mrs. Dickie, who has for years been active in every good word and work. Dr. Dickie was born June 6, 1851, in Oxford county, Canada. The family moved to Lansing in 1858, where he attended the public schools. He came to Albion college in 1869 and graduated in 1872. The following year he served as principal of the high school in Dansville, Mich., December 22, 1872 he married Mary A. Brockway. He occupied the position of superintendent of the city schools of Hastings from 1873 to 1877, when he was elected Professor of Mathematics and Astronomy in Albion college, a position which he continued to hold until 1887. During the year 1882, he raised $10,000 for the building of the observatory which now graces the campus. He has been secretary of the Board of Trustees most of the time since 1882, and a member of the board twelve years. For the last four years he has been treasurer and manager of the Endowment Fund committee. He has been three times elected a lay delegate to the general conference, for the sessions of '92, '96, and 1900. He became widely known as chairman of the Prohibition National committee, a position which we held for twelve years from 1888 to 1899 when he resigned. He has spoken in every city in the union having a population of over 10,000. As candidate for the office of governor of Michigan, in 1886, he received the highest vote ever cast in the state for a prohibition governor. In the famous amendment campaign in this state in 1887, he was chairman of the non-partisan Committee which directed the campaign. It aroused great interest. Prominent speakers were brought here from all over the country. In connection with John G. Wooley he assumed the editorial management of the New Voice in August, '99. During the year which followed the circulation of the paper was more than doubled. Dr. Dickie is at present president of Albion college, president of the Albion Buggy Co., of the Music Festival Association, and the Trust Association of New York, secretary to the College Corporation, treasurer of the Endowment Fund Committee and director of the Commercial and Savings bank of Albion. Although but a short time has elapsed since Dr. Dickie entered upon his new duties, the result of his work has already become apparent. Aside from the material and visible evidences of prosperity, -- the erection of the new library, the beautifying of the college campus and other improvements, -- there has been aroused widespread and renewed interest in Albion college, which was evidenced in the enthusiastic manner in which President Dickie was received at both conferences, and will be manifested in an increased number of students and in the building up of the college in every way. The debt was decreased $1,423 last year, and there is now on hand, in notes and pledges more than one half the amount necessary to pay the entire indebtedness. With these cheering tokens of coming successes and prosperity, let every friend of Albion college rally to the support of our new president, Dr. Samuel Dickie. From Our New President.
