Albion College Principals & Presidents

JOHN P. ASHLEY was born at Stoke-on-Trent, April 14, 1862.  His parents having died in his early childhood and having no brothers or sisters, he left England in his early youth and came to friends in Brooklyn, N.Y.  Here he remained till 1884, and after spending a short time at Zanesville, Ohio, entered the Ohio Wesleyan University in 1885.  Here he pursued a classical course and a post graduate in Hebrew - graduated in 1890 afterwards receiving a Ph.D., from this institution.

In 1890, Dr. Ashley entered Boston University and pursued the full regular course for the degree of S.T.B.  He was honored with an appointment to a traveling Fellowship in 1893, and under the supervision of Professor Borden P. Browe, studied in the universities of Jena, Leipzig, Berlin, and Oxford.  At Jena his instructors were - Eucken, Leibmann, and Rein; at Leipzig, Wundt, Heinse, and Wulker; at Berlin, Pfleiderer, Paulsen, and Weis; at Oxford, Caird, Fairbairn, Wallace and Sanday.  In 1894, he returned to Boston to receive the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.  In 1895 he became president of the Genesee Wesleyan Seminary, Lima, N.Y., where he remained three years.

In January, 1898, he came to Albion College and remained at the head of the institution until 1901 when he went west.  Dr. Ashley passed away at Pacific Grove, California, several years ago.
