FREDERIC
SAMUEL GOODRICH
Beginnings
Frederic Goodrich was born September 9,
1865 in Waterbury, Connecticut to Augusta I. and Helen I. Goodrich,
members of an old family who came to the United States from England in
the early 17th century.
Education
Goodrich graduated from Waterbury High School in 1882; afterwards,
working on the editorial staff of a local newspaper for a year. In 1885,
he graduated from Wesleyan Academy in WIlbraham, Massachusetts. He
received his B.A. from Wesleyan University in Middleton, Connecticut in
1890; while there, he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and the Psi Upsilon
fraternity. Goodrich received his M.A. degree from the University of
Michigan in 1898. He completed his doctor of divinity degree at Defiance
College in 1909. Goodrich was given an honorary degree, doctorate of
literature, from Albion College in 1935, as well as a certificate of
meritorious service signed by every member of the faculty. Over the
course of his life, he also studied at Yale University, the University
of Chicago, the American Archaeological Institute in Athens, and the
University of Berlin.
Albion College
From 1891-1892, he taught Greek as an assistant at Wesleyan
University. Later in 1892, he left the east coast to become a member of
the Detroit and Michigan Conferences of the Methodist Episcopal Church
and to begin teaching Greek language and literature at Albion College.
In 1894, he directed a cast of fifty students in "Oedipus Tyrannus" at
Albion College, the first Greek play to ever be produced in Michigan.
Goodrich filled the position of chair of English Bible at Albion in
1903. He was chosen by the Board of Trustees to act as president of
Albion College during the second semester of the 1923-1924 academic
year.
Family
In 1893, Goodrich married Mary Harrison in Waterbury, Connecticut.
Their son, Frederic H. Goodrich graduated from Albion College in 1916;
their daughter, Helen Goodrich Daulton, circa 1920. In 1943, the couple
renewed their vows, officiated by then-president of Albion, John L.
Seaton.
Membership
In 1900 he joined the Masonic order. He also ran as a candidate for
Governor of Michigan on the Prohibition ticket in 1900. Goodrich was
Secretary of the Michigan Sunday School Association from 1910 to 1921,
and edited the association's monthly publication, The Advance. He
conducted Bible conferences in Mexico in the summer of 1923, and was a
candidate for the Calhoun District Delegate to the State Convention on
National Prohibition Repeal in 1932. He ran for governor again on the
Prohibition ticket in 1942. In 1948 he joined the Knights Templar.
Death
Frederic Goodrich died April 17, 1948 due to complications from a
stroke.
