36. Whitehouse Hall

Like the Whitehouse Nature Center, this dormitory is named for William W. Whitehouse, former president of the College. Four generations of the Whitehouse family have graduated from Albion. Currently, James Whitehouse, a grandson of W.W. Whitehouse, serves the Institutional Advancement Office of the College, for Gift and Estate Planning. Dr. Whitehouse was known as "Tri-W" or "W-Cubed". He was noted for knowing, and remembering, the name of every single student.

Whitehouse Hall was completed in October of 1964, originally meant to be an upper class dormitory for men. It is connected to the south side of Baldwin Hall and houses 209 upper-class students (primarily juniors and seniors). This is a suite-style residence hall with double rooms connected by a bathroom.

Dr. Whitehouse gave the following address at the dedication ceremony:

Mr. Sebastian, President Norris, and Mr. Kresge:

The naming of this building came as a distinct surprise to us. Nearly a  year ago Dr. Dwight Large notified me of the generous action of the Board of Trustees.  Mrs. Whitehouse and I, together with the members of our families are deeply appreciative of this honor.

This is a stately and well planned building and will have lasting significance in the lines of generations of students who will share rich and rewarding fellowship in this residence hall.

We are proud of our great college with its outstanding heritage and continuity, and rejoice to see the expanding frontiers of a marked new achievements of the Albion of today.

Gratitude is expressed to God for the loyal alumni, church and friends who are giving service to the College in this dynamic age.

On this day of dedication I desire to render a tribute to Stanley S. Kresge, my close friend of the years, as a courageous and wise leader of one of the great Foundations which today is fulfilling a world wide ministry in dedicated philanthropy, long in the heart of his enterprising father, Dr. Sebastian S. Kresge.

As we gather here, today, many of us are also remembering with sincere thankfulness the two leaders whose names appear on the building that are part of this total structure. It was a privilege to enjoy close friendship with President John L. Seaton, my distinguished predecessor under whom I served as teacher and dean. Our fellowship through many years with Howard C. Baldwin, nationally known attorney, churchman and business leader, was an enriching experience to many of us here. Baldwin Hall honors his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Charles Baldwin.

I am confident that you join with me in the sustaining of the exciting conviction that for this outstanding Christian College, quoting the phrase used so often by Dr. Seaton, "The best is yet to be." In behalf of Mrs. Whitehouse, our families, and myself a sincere and humble thank you.
