Library Information for Faculty
Who to Contact - Liaison Librarians by Academic Department
The Library Liaison program has been established to promote partnerships between academic departments and the Library, and to improve
communication between librarians and faculty. Librarians are assigned to specific academic departments to:
- inform faculty members about library services, policies, and new information resources;
- work with faculty to identify curricular and departmental information needs and priorities;
- work with faculty to develop high-quality collections in their subject areas;
- teach library instruction sessions and work with faculty to promote information literacy;
- provide reference/research assistance.
Liaisons are happy to attend departmental meetings to share information regarding library resources and services.
We encourage you to
contact
your
liaison librarian if you have any questions or comments about the library.
Acquisitions - Ordering Books, Periodicals, Videos/DVDs, etc.:
The Library book budget is divided into two sections: (1) Academic Department Funds and (2) Librarian Liaison Funds.
1) Academic Department Funds. Every academic
department and interdisciplinary program has a fund allocated by the library.
The department chair is given information about the fund amount. Requests may be
submitted by e-mail, lists, catalogs, Choice cards, etc. You may also
contact your liaison
using this form. Deadlines for submission of all library
purchase requests are December 1 and March 1.
(2) Librarian Liaison Funds.
Each librarian has liaison responsibility to
specific departments and interdisciplinary majors. Requests for specific book or media titles
can be
submitted to your library liaison by phone, email or
online form. The liaison will
determine the availability of funds and forward approved requests to Library
Acquisitions. Approving requests is based in part on these criteria:
- The needs of new tenure-track faculty hired in the
last three years
- The need to support new majors, minors,
concentrations, and courses
- The needs of revised majors, minors, concentrations,
and courses
- Academic subject area collections in need of
significant improvement
Course Reserves:
Faculty may place readings and other materials on reserve at the Library Circulation
Desk, for use by the students in their classes. Whenever possible, reserve items will be made available online.
When putting items on reserve, faculty can choose from several loan periods.
For more information, please see
Course Reserve Readings: Frequently Asked Questions for Faculty
Borrowing Library Materials:
The normal faculty loan period for books is one year. For
videos/DVDs, the loan period is 2 weeks. Periodicals and reference materials do not normally circulate.
Complete details on loan periods can be found here.
Renewals - Provided a hold has not been placed by another patron, books and other materials can be renewed,
either at the Library Circulation Desk or
online.
Request a hold on an item - Library patrons may request a hold on materials which are checked
out to another user by clicking on the "Place A Hold" button in the Library online catalog, or
by contacting the Circulation Desk at ext. 0479.
Interlibrary Loan and MeLCat:
The interlibrary loan (ILL) service obtains materials not owned by the Albion
College Library for Albion College students, faculty and staff. This service provides photocopies
of articles from journals and newspapers (Article Request Form), as well as books,
dissertations, microforms and other materials (Book Request Form), which are borrowed from another library and
made available to the requester for periods of time determined by the lending library. ILL also supplies items requested by other libraries. Photocopies of articles, books, and other materials obtained through interlibrary loan are supplied in accordance with copyright law.
MeLCat is a document delivery program involving
many academic and public Michigan libraries. Albion College students, faculty, and staff can
directly request books and other materials (no journal articles at this time) online from the
other libraries in the group without going through traditional Interlibrary Loan.
Renewal requests for items borrowed through Interlibrary Loan can be submitted
by using this form.
Library Instruction:
Librarians welcome the opportunity to provide library instruction classes, in order to
teach students how to use information sources and how to evaluate those sources. Library instruction sessions
can be tailored to cover specific courses and subjects. To arrange library instruction sessions,
contact your department's librarian liaison, or call the Reference Desk at 517-629-0382.
Reference Services and Research Assistance:
Reference and research assistance is available to faculty and students through
consultation with a librarian at the Reference Desk, by calling the Reference Desk at 517-629-0382,
or through the Ask A Librarian web page. Librarians
are also happy to schedule appointments for individual research consultations.
