MLA International Bibliography
The most important database for research in literature. Indexes books, essay collections, working papers, proceedings, dissertations, and bibliographies in literature, language, linguistics, and folklore.


Humanities Abstracts
Indexes periodicals in literature, archaeology, art, classics, film, folklore, journalism, linguistics, music, the performing arts, philosophy, religion, and world history. Coverage begins in 1984.


Arts and HumanitiesSearch
Indexes 1300 of the world's leading arts and humanities journals. Coverage begins in 1980.

19th Century Masterfile
"The largest resource for pre-1920 studies." Includes Poole's Index to Periodical Literature (1802-1906), Index to Periodical Articles in Religion (1890-1899), Index to Legal Periodical Literature (1786-1922), Cumulative Index to a Selected List of Periodicals (1896-1899), Index to Periodicals (1890-1906), The Psychological Index: A Bibliography of the Literature of Psychology and Cognate Subjects (1894-1905).

HarpWeek
HarpWeek provides online access to the full text (with images) of Harper’s Weekly magazine, the illustrated 19th century "Journal of Civilization" for the years 1857-1889. Harper's Weekly is perhaps the most important primary resource for examining 19th-century America on a cumulative week-to-week basis. HarpWeek's electronic database makes it possible for the user to access news stories, illustrations, cartoons, editorials , biographies, literature, and advertisements that shaped and reflected public opinion in this era.

New York Times, 1851-2001
This database offers full-text and full-image articles from the New York Times, beginning with its first issue in 1851. The database includes digital reproductions of every page from every issue--cover to cover--in downloadable PDF files…a total of more than 3,400,000 pages.

Project Muse
Provides access to a number of full text journals, including American Literary History, American Literary Scholarship, MLN, MLQ: Modern Language Quarterly, Modern Fiction Studies and Modernism/Modernity.

JSTOR
Provides access to a number of full text journals, including American Literature, Modern Language Notes, Nineteenth-Century Literature and Nineteenth-Century Fiction. Most JSTOR journals begin with the first volume of the journal, but the most recent 3-5 years are generally not available.

Making of America
"Making of America is a digital library of primary sources in American social history from the antebellum period through reconstruction. The collection is particularly strong in the subject areas of education, psychology, American history, sociology, religion, and science and technology. The collection currently contains approximately 8,500 books and 50,000 journal articles with 19th century imprints."

Brief Timeline of American Literature and Events: Pre-1620 to 1920
"This timeline provides a short chronology of events in American history and literature. It is linked to course pages and bibliographies as well as to a set of more general linked resources: pages on American authors, literary movements, and American literature sites. Each author page contains a picture (if available), a bibliography (if available), links to major sites about the author, and links to works online."
