New Library Spaces

Potential Gift Ideas for New and/or Improved Library Spaces

1. Learning Commons
This is a major project that will probably be part of a campus master planning process that has not yet begun. The basic idea of a Learning Commons is to create a shared space where students and faculty may come to receive support for teaching and learning, research, and assignments. Key staff from IT, the library, Academic Skills and other units will provide the staff to provide a wide range of learning support services. In addition the Commons will be a place for learning collaborations for individuals or groups of different sixes to meet and work on assignments, research or class preparations at any time they need (24/7 access). Remote access to resources and support will also be provided from wherever the student, faculty, or staff member may be at the time. The Commons will also be a social space for the campus, where people will be able to meet; find refreshments; browse for films and popular reading; or attend special events such as visiting authors, discussion panels, workshops or seminars. The space will be designed to be highly flexible and adaptable to many uses for groups of varying size, while maintaining options for those seeking quiet and solitude for reading and individual study. There will be coffee bar that is open extended hours for refreshments and informal gatherings or just taking a break.

This project will involve major renovations of both the Stockwell and Mudd library buildings, necessitating a designer and architect with experience and knowledge of new library and learning space designs.

Library renovations necessary for the Learning Commons

  • Versatile reading and study spaces for students
  • Compact shelving for library stacks
  • New entrance
  • Mudd attic renovation for other than storage use
  • Coffee shop and expanded lounge
  • Library standardization for environmental systems and lighting
  • Improved power access
  • Remote storage facility for materials in less demand
  • Work area redesign and compact shelving for Special Collections

2. Juvenile Book Room

3. Renovation of the original Madelon Stockwell Memorial Room
Per the donor's last will and testament, the Madelon Stockwell's parlor furniture and other belongings were to be on display in a room in the Stockwell Memorial Library. Because of the poor environmental control of Stockwell Room 305, the materials had to be removed to the Mudd Learning Center in Special Collections. This project requires renovation and restoration of the original Madelon Stockwell Memorial Room in the Stockwell Library so that her belongings can be stored and exhibited there properly and securely.

4. The President's Room
This project would require restoration of the best portrait paintings of former Albion College presidents and the replacement or addition of portraits of those not pictured.
