What is EndNote?

EndNote is one of the most popular Personal Bibliographic Management programs in use today. EndNote is designed to help the writer and researcher:

  • Maintain a database of references to books, articles, websites, and other resources;
  • Download bibliographic references from online databases;
  • Insert references from the EndNote library into word-processed documents;
  • Generate a bibliography/literature cited section in the correct style (MLA, APA, etc.), whether that is for a class assignment, or for publication in a journal. EndNote X currently supports more than 3,300 styles.

The EndNote Toolbar doesn't show up in Microsoft Word...how can I fix this?

This is a known issue. To fix it, you just need to copy and paste a couple of files...here's the fix:
This is from the EndNote website: http://www.endnote.com/support/faqs/CWYW/faq1.asp#winEN89

If the CWYW tools do not install for any reason during program setup you can manually install the tools by doing the following:

  • Within Microsoft Word go to the Tools menu and select Options.
  • Click the File Locations tab, highlight the Startup folder, and then click the Modify button.
  • Note the path to the Microsoft Word Startup folder. If no path is listed at the bottom of the window click on the “Look In” dropdown at the top of the window and note the path.
  • Close Word and Outlook if running.
  • Launch Windows Explorer and locate your EndNote folder. The default installation path is “C:\Program Files\EndNote X”.
  • There are two files in this folder you need to copy, depending on which version of Word you are using...
    • For Word 2000, use EN10CWYW.dot and EN10Cwyw.wll.
    • For Word XP and Word 2003 use EN10CWYW.dot and EN10Cwyw.WordXP.wll. If you do not see the .wll and .dot file extensions, go to the Tools menu and select Folder Options / View tab. Uncheck the box that reads “Hide file extensions for known file types” and click OK.
  • Locate the Word Startup folder and paste these two files into this folder. If you cannot find the specified folder, your Windows preferences may be set to hide the folder. In Windows Explorer go to Tools / Folder Options / View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is selected.
  • Launch Microsoft Word.
  • Before you use the tools for the first time, close Word, then open EndNote and an EndNote library, then re-open Word and click on one of the EndNote tools. The programs must only be opened in this order the first time you use the tools so that Windows will be configured correctly.

How can I create and print a bibliography?

Once you have created an EndNote Library, you can easily produce bibliographies or reading lists. Simply use the following steps:

  1. Open the EndNote Library that you want to use.
  2. Make sure all references in the Library are displayed (you may need to go to References on the toolbar and click on Show All References.
  3. Highlight the references you wish to include (you can do a keyword search to find relevant references...see FAQ #). Hold down the "Ctrl" key to highlight more than one reference.
  4. Go to References on the toolbar, and click on Show Selected References.
  5. Use the Sort References command, if necessary.
  6. Choose the output style (for example, APA, MLA, annotated, etc.) you would like to use from the drop down menu on the toolbar.
  7. Go to the File menu and select Print, OR go to the File menu and choose Export. You can then save the file in Rich Text Format (.rtf) (recommended), as a plain text file (.txt), or as a web page (.htm).

How can I create footnotes at the bottom of the page?

The easiest way to insert a footnote at the bottom of a page of text is to:

  1. Place the cursor in your Word document where you would like to cite a source.
  2. Go to Insert on the Word toolbar, then choose Reference, then Footnote - make sure the Footnote settings are as you want them.
  3. Go to EndNote and highlight the reference you wish to use.
  4. Go back to Word, and click Insert Citation from Word's EndNote toolbar.
  5. Be aware that some output styles do not automatically support using footnotes, although they can be edited in Style Manager to do so. Styles that do automatically support footnotes include Chicago and MLA.

Can EndNote display special characters (diacritics, Greek characters, etc.)?

EndNote can print some, but not all, diacritics and Greek characters. This website http://www.adeptscience.co.uk/kb/article/A7DA provides a thorough description of the process of inserting special characters into EndNote references.

Basically, the procedure is to use the ASCII and ANSI charts at the website above to find the symbol you want, then position the cursor in your EndNote reference where you want the symbol to appear. Then, hold the ALT key while typing the numeric code from the chart ON THE NUMERIC KEYPAD.
