Wireless Laptop Quick Start User Guide

Checking Out a Wireless Laptop

In cooperation with Information Technology, Stockwell-Mudd Libraries are pleased to offer laptops equipped with wireless network cards for use in the library.

Laptops are available to check out from the Circulation Desk for current Albion College students, faculty and staff up to 4-hours.  Patrons can refer to the Laptop Policy for more information. (For extended laptop use, contact Instructional Technology at X 0962, or e-mail reservations@albion.edu.)

Patrons should read Laptop Policy prior to checking out a laptop. A valid Albion College ID card must be presented to the circulation desk worker in order to sign out the computer.

Students must leave their ID at the Circulation Desk for the duration of the checkout. The ID will be returned when the laptop is returned.

You may also check out an external mouse and/or power cord.

Using the Laptop

bullet

Open the laptop by sliding the bar on the front of the computer to the right and lifting the monitor portion up.

bullet

Push the square gray button located on the left side of the laptop to turn the computer on. A green light should appear on the front of the computer notifying you that it is on.

bullet

The computer may take 2-3 minutes to power up. If you wish to print or save files, you must log in to the laptop using your Novell user name and password.

bullet

A fully charged laptop will work on its own battery for 2 or more hours before shutting down.  Playing CDs or DVDs will drain the battery much faster.  Be sure to periodically save any important information to your H drive or diskette to prevent data from being permanently lost.

bullet

An orange light on the laptop will blink when the battery power is running out. This is a warning that in approximately 2 minutes the laptop will run out of battery power.

bullet

When finished with the laptop, power down the laptop by clicking: Start -->Shut Down-->OK. All of the lights should be out on the computer before you close the screen. If necessary, you can manually shut the computer off by pushing in the square gray button on the left side for approximately 10 seconds.

bullet

Return laptop (and power cord and mouse, if also checked out) back to the Circulation desk. The desk worker will check that the equipment is in the same condition it was before it was checked out and return your college ID.
