Alert Services

Many of the Library's databases and online journals allow users to set up email alerts, which provide notification of the availability of new issues of specific journals (usually including tables of contents), of articles citing specific sources, or of recently published articles on a particular topic. Use the links and instructions below to set up email alerts. Many online journals (too many to list here) also allow users to set up alerts...to check for the availability of this service, use the journal's link on the Electronic Journals page.

ABI/Inform
Comprehensive database for business research topics, covering nearly 1800 worldwide business periodicals for in-depth coverage of business and economic conditions, management techniques, theory, etc. Both tables of contents and subject/keyword alerts can be set up. After conducting a search, click the "Set up Alert" button. To receive tables of contents, simply search by journal title(s), then click the "Set up Alert" button. You will be prompted to set up a profile.

America: History & Life
This database "is a complete bibliographic reference to the history of the United States and Canada from prehistory to the present. Published since 1964, the database comprises over 490,000 bibliographic entries for periodicals dating back to 1954." Covers over 2,000 journals published worldwide. Click on "Clio Alert Profile" on the database's main web page for complete set up instructions.

American Chemical Society Journals
Two types of alerts are available - ASAP Alerts which provide daily or weekly e-mail alerts of when individual articles are released on the Web, and/or e-mail alerts of the Table of Contents for specific issues on the day the complete issue is posted on the Web. Both include links to the full text.

BioOne
BioOne is a collection of full-text bioscience research journals "focused on the biological, ecological and environmental sciences." Use the link above to receive notification of new issues for any/all of the journals in BioOne.

ERIC
Indexes journal articles, books, theses, curricula, conference papers, and standards and guidelines in the field of Education. After conducting a search, save by clicking the "Alerts" link. You will be prompted to set up a profile, or to log in if you already have a profile.

Historical Abstracts
Click on "Clio Alert Profile" on the main web page for this database for complete set up instructions.

Nature
Each week, you can receive an e-mail when the new issue of Nature is published online. Includes the table of contents for that issue, with links to full text. Requires free registration.

PAIS International
After conducting a search, save by clicking the "Alerts" link. You will be prompted to set up a profile, or to log in if you already have a profile.

PLOS (Public Library of Science)
Includes alert services for PLOS Biology and PLOS Medicine.

Project Muse
"Receive weekly e-mail notifications of new journal issues or new titles available in Project Muse."

Science Magazine (AAAS)
"You will be notified by e-mail when new Science content goes online. You may choose to receive either a notification when the new issue is posted or the complete Table of Contents."

Science.gov
"The Science.gov ALERTS feature is a service that will notify you weekly of new Science.gov information in your specific areas of interest."

Social Services Abstracts
After conducting a search, save by clicking the "Alerts" link. You will be prompted to set up a profile, or to log in if you already have a profile.

Sociological Abstracts
After conducting a search, save by clicking the "Alerts" link. You will be prompted to set up a profile, or to log in if you already have a profile.

Web of Science
Provides access to the Science Citation Index, and Social Sciences Citation Index. Both databases include an alert feature that allows registered users (registration is free) to save search strategies which run automatically every time the database is updated. This service can also provide automatic Tables of Contents notification for new issues of a journal, and notification when user-selected articles are cited in a new publication. RSS feeds of the above are also available. To save a search, follow these steps:

  • Sign in (or register) on the main Web of Science web page
  • Enter your search(es)
  • Click on "Combine Searches" or go to the Advanced Search page to combine sets (if necessary)
  • Click on "Save History" button
  • Enter a History Name, then click "Save"  to "Save your history to the server"
