James B. Wells Farm
Sections 12 and 14 of Franklin Township
Legend has it that the Wells Farm was a station on the Underground
Railroad. James B. Wells was born in Rutland County, Vermont on
September 21, 1798. As a young man, he moved with his family to Ontario
County, New York, where he was married and lived for a number of years.
He moved to Lenawee County in the spring of 1835 and purchased a tract
of land in Franklin Township to farm. He invested in land over the
years, accumulating over six hundred acres throughout Franklin and
Tecumseh Townships. Wells began life as a member of the Presbyterian
Church, but joined the Congregationalists some years before his death.
He officiated as Deacon in his church. Early on, he identified with the
Whigs, only later to become a Republican. He died December 16, 1864.
