Abstract:
The use of iodine compounds in organic asymmetric synthesis has been of growing interest in the past decade. Due to the chemical properties of iodine relating to size and valency, these compounds are capable of hypervalent states. When iodine compounds are hypervalent, they can be used in asymmetric reactions. Such compounds have been shown to react with a variety of compounds to transfer chirality with moderate enantioselectivities by the French research group. Of particular synthetic interest are ylides using iodine. Related compounds with phosphorus, sulfur, and nitrogen have been previously used in related capacities, and thus the use of iodine in the ylide class of compounds was of interest. The research herein describes the synthesis and evaluation of iodonium ylides and their uses in synthetic organic chemistry.
